Programs and Events
MWPTA hosts a wide range of fun, community-building events for students and their families throughout the year. We also offer after-school programming from a variety of sources including our own Mt. Washington community.
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
MWPTA provides a variety of after-school options to enhance your child’s education and keep them active and engaged.
For after school care programs there are two options on campus at MWE:
1. The STAR program called Galaxy. This is open to TK and up.
2. Beyond the Bell. Please note Beyond the Bell is for 2nd-6th graders (though 1st grade siblings of older students can attend).
Beyond the Bell has provided an update to their K-1st grade program - they will now open it up to TK students. There is still no date for when the program will begin, but the anticipated date is mid to late September. This program is limited to 20 students who can commit to 5 days a week until 6:00 pm. There is a waitlist for any interested family; if you are interested in the program please contact the school office.
Currently the only after school care option for TK-1st grade is STAR. Registration is available online at https://www.starinc.org/galaxy-school-signup-2021-2022
Click the find your school tab and enter Mt. Washington Elementary.
There is a 3rd off-campus after school care option offered through the LA Department of Parks and Recreation at the Carlin G. Smith Recreation Center. Please check their website for additional information regarding programming at their facility.
In addition to after school care, there are a variety of classes offered through the STAR Enrichment program known as STAR NOVA, Parker Anderson and Community Led Enrichment. PLEASE NOTE: if your child is not enrolled in Galaxy or Beyond the Bell and will be attending classes after school, you are responsible for picking up your child at dismissal and taking them to their enrichment classes.
Professional after-school enrichment provider, Parker-Anderson, brings a staff of highly trained instructors and intellectually stimulating classes to students in a fun and exciting way! Classes offered through Parker-Anderson are coordinated by MWPTA but registration and payment is through their website. You can learn more about Parker-Anderson at www.parker-anderson.org and find their flyer on our Enrichment Classes page. Sessions begin on 9/13 and run through the week of 11/1.
Community member-led classes are also available for our students. We have an incredibly talented neighborhood and many parents and friends are eager to share their knowledge and skills with MWE kids. Each instructor provides their own registration and payment instructions. Please check the Enrichment Classes page for information on classes and registration for the 2021-2022 school year.
Visit After School Enrichment Classes for the latest schedule.
Please also check back for more courses offered by the Star Nova Program.
FUN and FREE
Join the MWPTA throughout the year for engaging activities designed to stimulate our students' curiosities, provide social-emotional opportunities, and support parents and families with expert presentations and workshops.
Though it is hard to imagine, all our students will eventually go on to Middle School. MWPTA hosts an annual Middle School Fair with resources and information to support our families. Our Middle School Fair will be held in person this year!
Annual Stargazing Event, the MWPTA partners with astronomer volunteers from the Los Angeles Astronomical Society to answer questions and help all budding astronomers among us get a look at some sparkling celestial bodies. Check back for more information as we try to plan this event as safely as possible!
Open Air Music or Movie Night. We are in the midst of trying to create some fun, safe opportunities for the community to come together. Check back for updates on a possible outdoor movie or music night.
The MWPTA also invites speakers to offer their insight on a variety of relevant topics. These meetings typically occur following the bi-monthly PTA General Association meetings. We will be sending information to families in the weekly e-Howl regarding speakers and topics.
ARTS COLLECTIVE AFTER SCHOOL (ACAS)
Once a month, ACAS engages our students in an innovative and exploratory project. These projects provide an explorative and experimental approach to making and creating where the outcome is not predetermined.
