PTA Reflections Program Update

The art is in!

Mount Washington students submitted 35 works of art to our Reflections program. It was an incredible collection of original songs, films, drawings, paintings, dance, poetry, essays, and sculptures. All on the theme of "I Will Change the World By..."

So what’s next?

Our judges are weighing in. Each judge is a professional from one of the Reflections categories, but the judges will evaluate every piece. They’ll be scoring them blindly — only knowing the Title and the Artist’s Statement — on Interpretation of Theme, Creativity, and Technique. For the physical submissions that were handed in, since we’re still in Covid times, I set up a "gallery" on my front porch and invited the Judges to come and peruse.

In each category of art, and within each age group, there will be one Award of Excellence, one Award of Merit, an Honorable Mention, and Participant Certificates. The Award of Excellence in each category will progress on to the District level, where another round of Judges will consider Mount Washington pieces alongside schools from the entire District. Any Award of Excellence recipients there will have the chance to proceed to the State level, and maybe even on to the National Reflections program.

I am working to compile all the pieces into a format that can be shared with the school, so that in the New Year we can have a Virtual Gallery showing and you can all appreciate the rising talent within our community.

About the PTA Reflections Program

Each year, the National PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme. Themes are selected from thousands of ideas submitted by students to the National PTA Reflections theme search.

Reflections encourages students of all ages to:

  • Unleash creative talents and be inspired
  • Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
  • Experience the fun and joy of making art
  • Tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
  • Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.

Exhibition categories include:

  • Visual Art
  • Music Composition
  • Photography
  • Film
  • Literature/Writing
  • Dance Choreography

National-level Outstanding Interpretation honorees are recognized at the National PTA Convention, plus their artwork, along with any National Award of Excellence and Merit winners, are featured in Reflections’ popular traveling national exhibit.
